Klamath Dam Removal Day of Action is today - Oct. 23rd!!

ACTION ALERT:

The agreement to remove the Klamath River dams is the result of almost 20 years of scientific studies, advocacy and negotiation. During the last 20 years, due to the Klamath dams, the Klamath River has dealt with serious toxic algal blooms which have had a detrimental effect on the salmon numbers, thereby threatening the West Coast fishing industry and Tribal subsistence.

Please reach out to Warren Buffett via email and/or phone to respectfully express the importance Klamath dam removal will have on wild salmon populations -- which in turn will feed the 74 remaining members of the critically endangered Southern Resident killer whale population.

As we continue to move forward towards dam removal, it's vital that we state the factual importance of dam removal while remaining respectful in our efforts of being environmental stewards. :)

On July 16, 2020, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) made the decision to partially transfer the Klamath dams to a dam removal entity and conditioned that PacifiCorp remained a co-licensee.

In late September 2020, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 4447, the Clean Economy Jobs and Innovation Act. This amendment is designed to safeguard Tribal communities against further harm to the Klamath River and its ecosystem and remediate existing problems in the Klamath River basin and downstream communities caused by four aging dams owned by PacifiCorp. The time has come to end the delays and solve this problem.

FACTUAL TALKING POINTS:

1. Shallow, stagnant reservoirs breed toxic algae and decimates water quality, pushing Klamath salmon, especially Spring Chinook salmon, to the brink of extinction. Endangered Southern Resident killer whales need wild, healthy Chinook salmon to ensure the pregnant and lactating females can contribute healthy caves to this dwindling populations numbers.

2. The 55 year old dams generate relatively little electricity while the reservoirs contain highly toxic blue and green algae and also block the path of threatened salmon.

3. Anadromous species have lost access to over 420 miles of spawning grounds and habitat. The Klamath Tribes have not had access to salmon in over 100 years.

4. A lack of salmon and clean water directly contributes to ongoing health issues in the region, including high rates of diabetes and heart disease for native people.

5. Dwindling salmon populations make it so fishermen and communities can not subsist from salmon fisheries, contributing to poverty and a loss of livelihood in Oregon and California.

5. Financially, dam removal is cheaper than retrofitting improvements in the form of fish ladders.
