August 20, 2012Shouka Moves from a life of Solitary ConfinementLate last night Shouka was moved from Six Flags Discovery Kingdom to SeaWorld San Diego.And, over the past two years, Wendy Brunot and Vicky Bailey have invested an endless amount of time of persistent dedication; tenacity and self-sacrifice. All their hard work, ultimately, was the push needed that not only brought attention to Shouka's predicament, but was enough to help change her situation to a better one.Orca Conservancy is aware and whole-heartedly believes that captivity is not the answer. But we also realize that each and every captive orca has a story, and a past. Not every captive orca is a release candidate, and not every captive orca is a successful candidate for a sea pen. That is the stark reality. That is a fact.As Shouka begins this new journey in her life, we are hopeful that her temperament will improve, that she will adjust and make friends with her orca counterparts. We wish her the best. And, based on the photo this is ‘proof positive’ that this was the best decision for her.This is not a celebration, but it is bittersweet. This is what advocacy is all about; getting things done.
